Description
Built in 1073, St. Nicholas is the oldest Norman church in Sussex. The only part of Bramber Castle still in regular use, its terrace provides views across the Adur Valley. The chancel arch includes eleventh century figure carvings, one of only three examples still in existence in Britain. Hanging in the church is a large mace which was a symbol of office for leaders of Bramber, one of whom was William Wilberforce, the great reformer, who was MP for Bramber 1812-25.
