Ashurst Church St James

Things to do in Horsham District

Description

The main nave of this church was probably built before 1135 with the aisle, western nave and tower built around 1200. The nave and aisle were later covered in one span by a roof and the aisle was extended eastwards to create a chapel. The church also possesses a replica vamp horn formerly used by the parish orchestra; which is one of only eight known in England. Margaret Fairless Barber, author of The Road Mender under the name Michael Fairless is buried in the churchyard.
