Meet South Lodge chef Jordon Powell

On Saturday 27 April 2013, 14-year-old Jordon Powell won the National Finals of the Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland’s ‘Young Chef’ Competition held in Cheltenham.

South Lodge Executive Chef Lewis Hamblet who had been mentoring Jordon during his work experience at the hotel said, “I had a very excited Jordon looking for my house and knocking on doors down my street trying to locate me on Saturday evening because he wanted to tell me in person that he’d won – to me, that really demonstrates his excitement and respect that he has.

I am personally very proud of Jordon and I’m sure that Forest school and the Horsham Rotary are delighted too. He is a very talented individual and will go far, I can assure you all that this is only the beginning as he has the full might of Exclusive Hotels behind him and he has a very bright future ahead.”

Jordon said, “Winning the competition has meant so much to me but it would not have been possible without the inspirational chefs at South Lodge. Being with them has changed the way I see and use food and I can’t wait to learn new things. I want to thank all of them!”

With a total of four Michelin stars and 19 AA Rosettes across the Exclusive Hotels Collection including 1 Michelin Star and 4 AA Rosettes for The Pass at South Lodge - as well as brimming kitchen gardens at all of the properties - food and fine dining are at the very heart of the hotel group.

Crates Local Horsham

Crates has recently been taken over by Lisa Charles.

Crates brings the best and freshest of local produce into Horsham Town Centre. The South East is blessed with hundreds of local producers and artisans who are rearing, growing and baking everything from artisan bread, fruit and vegetables, dairy, eggs, preserves, chocolate, oils, coffee roasting together with many award winning local brewers, gin makers and vineyards. Crates is one of the only outlets in Sussex to stock almost entirely local produce, directly sourced.

Crates also has a coffee shop, putting the local supply of beans from Horsham Coffee Roaster to good use. A ready supply of local, single origin non-homogenised milk also ensures the Crates Baristas serve up amongst the best coffee in town. This is a real bonus for the workforces so close by.  The food option includes freshly made sandwiches, toasties, bagels using locally made sourdough breads, fine cheese and even locally cured meats. In the winter, the fresh veggies from the shop are magically turned into nourishing soups and, for summer, they become salads. Of course, no good coffee shop should be without bakes and pastries so Crates sources in from their local bakers and makers.

The Coffee Shop is also fully licenced and recently refurbished to meet COVID regulations as well as provide comfortable seating so, why not come in and relax with a cold beer or a glass of award winning English sparkling wine. Enjoy fresh coffee, tea and lots of fabulous treats are also there to enjoy.

Crates has been there for everyone throughout lockdown and will be there to get you through returning to the office and providing gifts, hampers and food delivered to your door to treat your family, friends and loved ones.   We will continue to get through this testing time together.
