Prefer your exercise with rugged, natural surroundings? There’s a mix of great trail running and walking events in and around the District this year that make the most of the Downs Link and the South Downs. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, an avid hiker, or simply sick of road-running, take a look at our top five and set yourself a new challenge.

Dark Star 7 with Run Brighton

The Dark Star 7 is an ideal seven-kilometre flat trail run on the Downs Link, between Partridge Green and Henfield. Starting and finishing at the Dark Star Brewery, this event promises to be a great day out with all finishers receiving a free pint and BBQ meal for their efforts.

Downs Link Ultra

Take on the whole 38-mile Downs Link trail in this October event, the Downs Link Ultra. A sell-out every year, the ultra-marathon is mainly flat after a steep downhill start. A great option for anyone looking to do their first Ultra marathon.

Serpent Trail events

Run through habitats rarer than rainforests on a special journey through the greensand hills, lowland heath, woodland and rivers meanders of Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire. The Serpent Trail offers races spanning 10k to 100k within the South Downs National Park ready for you to start exploring this summer.

Dawn on the Downs

Also this summer, the Dawn on the Downs is a stunning and picturesque 10km trail run on the South Downs, providing some of the best views around Sussex. The event is an early start but offers complimentary teas and coffees before and after the race to keep you going.

South Downs Way Annual Walk

Alternatively, if you’re looking for a different challenge, the annual South Downs Way Walk is an organised nine day walk along the full 100-mile length of the South Downs Way, one of England's finest national trails. By tradition, the walk is supported rather than guided and everyone is free to walk at their own pace each day!
